Today is my birthday.

I usually don’t make a big deal out of it. Inevitably and thankfully, there are always people in my life who remember and remind me in little ways. It’s only 10 a.m. and I’m not at work yet and I’ve already had a shower of hugs, voicemails, mail and scribbled drawings telling me that I am loved. Bliss.

So tonight, to celebrate, instead of watching another dreaded presidential debate (I fell asleep watching it last week), I’m going out to see a production of Chicago (the play) at the Stanley.  I’m excited because I hardly get to see shows like this and hardly ever go to the Stanley, which is a world-class theater & stage in downtown Utica.

The title of this post is “Higher” — I heard this song by Creed on the radio and (not for the first time) it really struck me on a visceral level …. It seemed to completely fit the mood of an overcast fall day with the leaves coming down and not a lot certain in my future, hoping that where I am is exactly where I need to be and the universe is slowly showing me that. ..

When dreaming I’m guided to another world

Time and time again
At sunrise I fight to stay asleep
‘Cause I don’t want to leave the comfort of this place
‘Cause there’s a hunger, a longing to escape
From the life I live when I’m awake
So let’s go there
Let’s make our escape
Come on, let’s go there
Let’s ask can we stay?
